I lead from inside the work.

I lead best with my hands on the work. At eLumen, a startup of engineers with no UX practice, I built the practice from zero, hired 3 designers and embedded each one in a dev team. At Siemens I ran design system governance across a 330+ product portfolio while still designing the patterns myself.

Below: the roles I have held, the teams I have managed, and how I bring executives and developers along.

Leadership roles

Siemens Digital Industries Software, 2021 to 2026

Team: Mentored 10 designers. Led a cross-functional design system team and 8 working groups of SMEs.

Team: Managed 3 designers I hired, each embedded in a dev team.

Founded the UX practice and built a 1,000+ component design system.

  3. 1517

    Director of Product Design

1517 Media (Augsburg Fortress Publishers), 2014 to 2018

Team: Led 4 multidisciplinary creative teams.

Ran the new product pipeline: 12 multimedia curriculum systems from concept to release, and 8 contextual research projects.

  4. Creative Director, Director of Curriculum Design

    Sparkhouse, 2008 to 2014

Team: Directed 45+ creatives and technical staff, including a team of 20 animators.

Drove the concept for Whirl, which beat first-year projections by about 30%.

  5. Director of New Brand Development

Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 2006 to 2008

Launched the company’s first web-delivered multimedia curriculum platform and The Lutheran Handbook, which sold 300,000+ copies in its first year.

How I run a project

The same 4 stages, whether the project is a pattern or a new product line.

  1. Understanding

Contextual research, site visits and interviews to find the real problem.

  2. Solutioning

Ideation with designers, SMEs and engineers, made visible in maps and wireframes.

  3. Validation

Testing with users across contexts before anything becomes a standard.

  4. Launch

Handoff into Agile teams, then governance so the work holds.
